Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Frequently asked questions related to the study.

Are you planning to bring passenger rail service to Hampton?

The Livable Centers Initiative study will examine a variety of land use and transportation issues in and around downtown, but will neither focus specifically on, nor be dependent upon passenger rail. To learn more about the plans for passenger rail, please contact Georgians for Passenger Rail.

Will the study determine what can happen on private property?

Conceptual plans will show one potential vision for the redevelopment of selected sites in the study area, but development decisions remain the responsibility of willing individual property owners and developers, subject to existing zoning and other regulations. All property owners are encouraged to attend public meetings and share their vision for the future.

Who is paying for this study?

This Livable Centers Initiative study is being funded by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) and the City of Hampton. The ARC funds 80 percent of the study's cost, and the City funds the remaining 20 percent.

Who will pay for the improvements proposed by the study?

The final study document and final plan presentation will explain who is responsible for each improvement and provide cost estimates. Funding for select transportation projects may be available through the Atlanta Regional Commission.

When will the plans begin to be implemented?

The study will develop a long-term (25-year) vision for the future. It can take several years to secure funding and begin construction on public projects to implement the vision, but private and community-supported improvements can begin sooner.
